April 22, 2004. Braselton, GA. Scott Bradley doesn’t expect to have much
free time during the Drift Atlanta weekend at Road Atlanta this weekend as he
prepares to do double duty, running in both the Sport Compact GP SCCA SPEED
World Challenge Touring Car invitational event as well as the inaugural Formula
Drift event.
“I’m really looking forward to this weekend and the amount of time we get behind the wheel,” Bradley exclaimed. “With the Touring Car series being the headlining event we get a lot of time on the track which will help us as we seek to dial in the Protomotive Mazda Protegé. We were limited with regard to track time during the first round at Sebring so this will give us a great chance to work on setups for this race as well our return trip here in the fall.”
Bradley is also excited to be participating in his first Formula Drift event as the Protomotive team will field a Mazda Miata for him to contest the championship. “I can’t wait to get out there in the drift event,” Bradley explained. “As a race driver I love getting the car sideways with smoke pouring off the tires, the only problem is that it tends to burn the tires up quickly and team managers can get a bit angry. With drifting that’s exactly what I'm supposed to do so at least now I won't get yelled at!”
Though both events require different driving styles Bradley knows both will require absolute concentration. “Whether you are on the race track or the drifting course you need to have delicate car control,” Bradley relates, adding, “The only difference is that when racing on the track your goal is to take the car to the edge of control and keep it there, while in drifting you need to take the car over that edge and still maintain control. It’ll be change of pace but I’m sure I will catch on quickly.”
The Sport Compact GP for the SCCA SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship is a non-points paying race but Bradley will still have the chance to compete for the richest purse in SPEED Touring Car history, totaling more than $40,000 with the race winner taking home a guaranteed $10,000.
